Rhythmic reading is not a chore, it is a skill learned by knowledge and regular practice.  We train our EYES to:

1.    Look ahead
2.    Look for / identify patterns (not just notes)
3.    See an entire measure, instead of individual notes
4.    Hear in your head what it sounds like before verbalizing

We know that practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent, so our goal is to learn correctly the first time. Learning is much easier than re-learning.

Take your time, especially at first, and get the feel of setting and keeping time. That is the first job of every musician. Teach your eyes to gradually look further and further ahead. Keep in mind those #2, #3, & #4 protocols above.

And enjoy it!  Learning to count rhythms  is deeply satisfying.
